You should get some good stool softeners, That is what they give you after you have a baby so that you won't have to push because you could pop your stitches out, also it hurts like hell. So I would get some of those but still talk to the Pharmacist. She will most likely say the same thing. If you are only taking a laxative that will just make you have to go, it won't make it any less painful. good luck.
